From survivor to lawyer – Elvia’s journey to empowerment
In Guatemala, violence against women is part of everyday life. Thousands of women experience abuse, discrimination, and injustice. And too often, their voices remain unheard. Elvia was one of those women who suffered abuse and violence. But she raised her voice because she didn’t want to be unheard. A story about empowerment and finding real purpose.
Violence against women in Guatemala
Sexual abuse, oppression, domestic violence, femicide. What sounds like the plot of a brutal movie is the reality for many women in Guatemala. And these are just some of the dangers they face every day and often perpetrated by their own fathers or husbands. Numerous girls and women suffer every year through Guatemalas harsh patriarchy.
One of these women is Elvia. She was born and raised in Jocotenango. Her mother died when she was only four years old, and her father than became an alcoholic. She and her sister were regularly raped by their own father, and her sister eventually got pregnant. She was at the mercy of her violent father for years. Eventually she married the love of her life and gave birth to two beautiful daughters. Sounds like she got her happily ever after? Well, not quite.

From pain to purpose
After more years of violence, Elvia separated from the father of her daughters and hoped for a fresh start. She moved with her children to a new town, ready to rebuild her life. But only a few months later, her past came crashing back. One night, her ex-partner arrived drunk. He broke a window, forced his way into the house, and brutally attacked Elvia.
“He beat me as if I were a punching bag,” Elvia recalls. “And he also attacked my little girls, Jennifer and Angie. There was so much blood when the police came to arrest him, and the paramedics rushed us to the hospital.”
Elvia’s injuries were severe. She needed eye surgery after the attack. But even in this moment of pain, she refused to let the violence go unpunished. Together with her daughters, she endured the long and painful process of a criminal trial. During this time, she met her lawyer, a woman who stood by her side with strength and compassion. “She had a voice like an angel,” Elvia says. “It was then that I knew: I wanted to become a lawyer myself. To defend women and protect people’s rights.”
That moment became her turning point. What could have been the end of her story became the beginning of a new chapter.
